A 16-year-old is facing fines of nearly $1,000 after fleeing from police while riding an e-dirtbike illegally on public roads.

He was just out for a wheelie good time, but it will cost a Burnaby teenager nearly $1,000.

A 16-year-old e-dirt biker was ticketed after police spotted him doing wheelies and travelling over the speed limit on Government Road in North Burnaby on Friday. When the RCMP officer attempted a stop, the biker cut into oncoming traffic, ran a stop sign and took off.

The officer did not pursue in consideration of public safety, but the rider returned to the area around 25 minutes later. This time, when he attempted to flee, he was stopped by police.

The rider was issued violation tickets for several infractions including failing to stop for police and driving without consideration. The total fines were $938.

“E-dirt bikes are not permitted on our roads, no matter your age,” said RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj. “Having your licence suspended and paying a fine is a much better outcome than the potential consequences police have recently seen at collisions involving these types of vehicles.”

The 16-year-old won’t be able to apply for a full driver’s licence until all fines are paid, and will likely have his class 7 (learner’s) licence suspended.
