Andrew Berry surely would’ve preferred to be somewhere else.

But as the Myles Garrett trade from the Cleveland Browns to the Los Angeles Rams neared the finish line, Berry wasn’t in his office. The Browns GM was at Firestone Country Club.
A new story on Monday, written by multiple ESPN insiders, shares that the Browns “were hosting a foundation charity event that day.”
That means that, as Berry tried to close a deal to send a future Hall of Famer out of Cleveland, he was surrounded by all sorts of people who are quite invested in the Browns.
“The deal was basically done, but Berry was coordinating with the Rams while interacting with Browns officials, coaches and players at the event, preparing to address the media once the news broke,” the ESPN insiders wrote.

It’s far from the craziest story of a trade being completed in an odd place, but it also couldn’t have been the simplest.
Berry ended up getting exactly what the Browns wanted: Jared Verse and a bevy of draft picks.
Verse is a two-time Pro Bowler already, and still just entering his third season in the NFL. He’s a young pass rusher, and while it’d be tough to fill Garrett’s shoes fully, he’s a great get.
The Browns also got a pick apiece in a future first round, second round and third round.
Trading away Garrett was never going to be easy. Hanging out by fairways while doing it probably made it even a bit more unconventional for Berry.

But in the end, the Browns and Rams got the deal to the 18th green and knocked in the putt. The rest of the story will be written in the seasons ahead.
