The Milwaukee Brewers did almost everything right at the plate in Game 3 of the National League Division Series on Tuesday night except the one thing that mattered most. They outhit the San Diego Padres 11-6, drew four walks and kept traffic on the bases, yet still walked out of Petco Park with a 4-3 loss.

Manager Pat Murphy did not hide from what went wrong, but he also gave credit to the team across the field.
“We hit four or five balls over 100 that were caught, but we also punched out in big situations,” Murphy said. “We had bases loaded. We had other big situations that we didn’t cut through, so it’s part of baseball. You’re facing a good team with a good pitching staff.”

The numbers back him up. Milwaukee left 11 runners on base, and one of its best late chances ended with a strikeout with the bases loaded. Christian Yelich also lined a ball up the middle in a big spot, only for Xander Bogaerts to snag it on a short hop and turn it into an out.

San Diego jumped ahead 2-0 in the third inning on a Fernando Tatis Jr. groundout and a Manny Machado RBI single. William Contreras answered with a solo homer in the fourth, and Jackson Chourio tied it with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Jake Cronenworth put the Padres back in front with a solo shot in the bottom half, and a throwing error by Cooper Pratt in the sixth pushed the lead to 4-2.
The Brewers got one back in the eighth but could not find the tying run. Michael King, who had thrown five innings just two days earlier, covered the final two frames for his first save since 2023. San Diego needed him after closer Mason Miller was placed on the paternity list about 45 minutes before first pitch.
The loss also extended Milwaukee’s postseason road losing streak to 12 games, a stat the Brewers will be eager to put to rest.
Milwaukee still leads the best-of-five series 2-1 and gets another crack at clinching in Game 4 on Wednesday at Petco Park. If the Padres force a decisive Game 5, the series would return to Milwaukee on Friday.
