Watch: Are Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein Really Dating? They Say…
There was a time when Brett Goldstein thought he’d pulled a red card on his acting career.
Although the Ted Lasso star is now a two-time Emmy-winning actor, Goldstein admitted that the earlier years of his career were so fraught, it caused him to spiral into a depression.
“It was all a bit grim,” he toldMen’s Health UK in an interview published Aug. 24. “I was getting older and I had this moment of genuine…I don’t know, epiphany, or something, where I was like, ‘Maybe I missed my window. Maybe the window of me having any sort of big success has gone.’”
It wasn’t a pleasant insight for the longtime stand-up comic, who started seeing a therapist shortly after his revelation.
“Every day she made me write a list of 10 things that happened that day that I was grateful for,” the 46-year-old recalled. “In the beginning, when you’re so, so depressed, it’s like, ‘Nothing.’ But you have to put 10 in. ‘The sun was up.’ That’s one. You start so small.”
Eventually, the daily practice changed his perspective.
“By day 30 of doing that, you’ve started training your brain to look for the positive,” he noted, “and I could write a list of 100 things. I’m the luckiest guy in the world! Everything’s f–king amazing!”
And while the Shrinking co-creator continued to be dealt failed pilots and rejections, he realized there was still a lot about his career to be grateful for.
“All I ever wanted to do was to make stuff,” he recalled telling himself. “I’m still doing that. I’m doing it at a very low level, but I do it nearly every day. And that’s the bit I actually like. I don’t care about being famous. If my life is what I have at the moment, then I’m the luckiest guy in the world.”

Plus, booking the gig as Roy Kent—after initially just being signed on as a writer—also didn’t hurt. As he noted, “I think two weeks later, I got the phone call about Ted Lasso.”
Six years after the Jason Sudeikis series premiered, Goldstein’s life looks drastically different—with forays into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a rom-com with Jennifer Lopez. However, he’s still taking the important steps to keep his mental health in check.
“I have to exercise every day or I go mad,” he admitted, noting he enjoys swimming to clear his head. “I love being in water. I think I was a mermaid in a previous life.”
