Watch: Billy Ray Cyrus Dedicates Nostalgic Track to Ex Tish Cyrus for Her Birthday
Billy Ray Cyrus is wearing his achy breaky heart on his sleeve.
The “Achy Breaky Heart” singer gave his ex-wife Tish Cyrus—with whom he shares kids Brandi Cyrus, 38, Trace Cyrus, 37, Miley Cyrus, 33, Braison Cyrus, 32, and Noah Cyrus, 26, with—a tender birthday shoutout by performing his 2007 ballad “Ready, Set, Don’t Go” in her honor.
“Two of the greatest mothers EVER were born on this day and tomorrow, my mother Ruthie on May 14th … and the mother driving Miley down that driveway as I wrote the song ‘Ready Set Don’t Go,’” Billy Ray captioned the clip shared to X May 13. “Happy Birthday Tish. Wishing you peace, love, and happiness … forever.”
In the video, the country singer—who finalized his divorce from Tish in 2022—strummed his guitar as he sings the emotional ballad, which he wrote in 2007 about watching Miley go off to follow her dreams on Hannah Montana.
And the song’s origins weren’t lost on the 64-year-old, who starred on the Disney Channel series alongside Miley from 2006 to 2011.
“TRUE STORY,” he added in the caption. “Dedicate this to Hannah Montana Nation and all our friends at Disney.”
Referencing the track’s lyrics, Billy Ray—also dad to Christopher Cody Cyrus, 34, with ex Kristin Luckey—added, “‘Got stars in her eyes, the prize is hers to win.’”
And though Billy Ray’s tribute indicates how far the former couple have come since their breakup, Tish—who married Dominic Purcell in 2023—recently opened up about the toll her divorce from Billy Ray had on her.
“Anything that’s happened I’m kind of like, ‘Well that’s life, just keep it moving,’” Tish explained during a Jan. 14 appearance on The Squeeze podcast. “I’d been in this relationship since I was 23 or 24 so, again, I kept it moving.”
On top of her marriage falling apart, the 59-year-old shared how the death of her mom Loretta Jean Palmer Finley only contributed to the pain of the split.
“Two of the most tragic things in my life that happened—I did not process or even stop to really think about,” Tish shared. “I’ve been very open that I was a major weed smoker. For that, because I’ve always had a little bit of anxiety, that was almost like medicine for me.”
Over a year after curbing her use of cannabis, Tish explained that she’s “just now” learning how to cope with her anxiety.
“I’m so much better,” she emphasized. “Like, I was not functioning for that year, I was just trying to survive. Now, I’m completely on the other side of that.”
