Watch: Benjamin Bratt Shares Favorite Memory of Filming Miss Congeniality
Benjamin Bratt thinks his Miss Congeniality costar is deserving of the title.
After all, the actor—who starred opposite Sandra Bullock in the 2000 movie—believes she’s “one of the loveliest people” he’s ever worked with.
“I remember Sandy at the helm as a producer and as the star of the film,” Benjamin exclusively told E! News’ Will Marfuggi at the Los Angeles premiere of his new movie Balls Up April 14. “She was courageous and willing to go for anything.”
And Sandra’s leadership created an environment for him and their costars Michael Caine, Candice Bergen, William Shatner and Heather Burns to take risks.
“That’s really the beauty of being in a situation where you’re working with the kinds of people where the safety net is built in,” the 62-year-old—whose new movie Balls Up with Mark Wahlberg and Paul Walter Hauser is out now on Prime Video—continued. “It encourages you as a performer to just jump off the cliff and see what happens.”
Those risks paid off, with the movie scoring the 2005 sequel Miss Congeniality 2: Armed & Fabulous starring Sandra and Regina King (though Benjamin was not part of the cast). And 25 years after Sandra stole hearts as FBI agent-turned-pageant queen Gracie Hart, the franchise remains a fan-favorite.
“It really endures because of Sandy and what she did with it,” Benjamin said on Good Morning America in May. “Of course, the writing is hilarious and the directing is brilliant, but Sandy is not afraid to make a fool of herself, to be silly.”

Plus, the Law & Order alum said Sandra’s character is one where “it’s fun to relate to someone like that.”
But in the end, the Gravity actress—who recently joined Instagram—set an example for the cast and crew because, as he put it, “She leads from the top.”
“If you start the work day with an essence of fun,” Benjamin added, “then hopefully the result will fall into line.”
