A man has been charged in an assault and robbery that left a 19-year-old man with a five-inch gash on his face, and Vancouver police are seeking his alleged accomplice.

A 19-year-old was out with friends in the 900-block of Granville Street at around 3:20 a.m. on Aug. 8 when they were approached by two men. A chain was snatched from around the victim’s neck and he was slashed, leaving him with a wound from the tip of his nose, under his eye and up to his eyebrow.

Early last week, VPD detectives arrested 29-year-old Garret William Thomas in the Downtown Eastside and executed a search warrant at his home. Thomas is charged with one count of robbery and one count of aggravated assault. He remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Guilty verdict in homicide of ‘mean’ roommate

A man who claimed stabbing his roommate 23 times was a “bad accident” has been found guilty of the August 2023 homicide.

Paul John Martin of Surrey was found guilty of second-degree murder of 56-year-old Robb Memory, a conviction that carries an automatic life sentence. He will appear in court in New Westminster on Thursday to hear the terms of his parole eligibility to be determined by Justice Barbara Norell.

On Aug. 27, 2023, Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious death at a home near 91st Street and 68th Avenue, and found Memory dead.

The Delta Now reported that Martin, now 45, stabbed Memory several times in the chest and upper back in their house in the 19100-block of 68th Avenue as the pair argued while Memory played a video game. Martin claimed it was a “bad accident” and unintentionally killed Memory, who he described as “very mean” to him.

Police seeking witnesses in Crab Park homicide

A man was found dead from his injuries at Crab Park on E. Waterfront Road Wednesday morning, marking the sixth homicide of the year in Vancouver.

VPD had been called to the park on Wednesday morning just before 7 a.m. today after receiving reports of a man in medical distress. The man was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts from first responders.

There are no known suspects in the preliminary stage of investigations, nor has the man’s identity been confirmed or his manner of death released.

Man stabbed, robbed in downtown

A man was robbed after being stabbed in the arm on Tuesday night in downtown Vancouver, near Granville and Nelson streets, say Vancouver police.

The VPD had responded to reports of a stabbing around 10:45 p.m. and found the victim, who was stabbed while being robbed by two suspects, who stole his bag. The suspects ran southbound on Granville Street after the incident.
