Surrey police seek suspect in Bear Creek park groping

Surrey police are searching for a man suspected of sexually assaulting a teen at Bear Creek Park last weekend.

Officers were called to the park shortly after 8:10 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report that a female youth had been assaulted, the Surrey Police Service said in a news release Wednesday.

The victim told police she was groped by a man who then fled the area. She provided investigators with a description of the suspect, but officers were unable to locate him after searching the park and surrounding areas.

Police have released photos of the suspect and are asking the public for help identifying him. He is described as South Asian, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, and was wearing a blue Adidas toque, a black T-shirt, black pants and black flip-flops at the time of the incident.

One man injured in early-morning shooting in Surrey

One man was injured in an early-morning targeted shooting in Surrey’s Cloverdale neighbourhood Wednesday.

The Surrey Police Service says it happened shortly before 4 a.m. near a residence in the area of 60 Avenue and 177 Street.

Police say two people were shot at, with one sustaining minor injuries that did not require hospitalization. The shooters fled.

Investigators believe the shooting was targeted but not extortion related.

Teen accused of brandishing weapon in Vancouver

A 19-year-old man is facing weapons charges after an incident in the Granville Entertainment District.

According to police, at around 1:50 p.m. on Wednesday the man entered a store and allegedly knocked over tables, showed people a knife and began stabbing a store sign.

A man matching the suspect’s description was arrested soon after, two blocks away.

Noah Kawerninski, 19, is charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing.

QR code scam hits New Westminster drivers

Police are raising the alarm after numerous people, including one person out $2,000, fell for a bogus QR code sticker adhered to parking meters throughout New Westminster.

New West Police said they’ve fielded several complaints from victims who scanned the QR codes labelled “scan to pay” on the front of the meters, with the link taking them to a seemingly legitimate site to enter their credit card information to complete the parking transaction. But the victims later noticed that they had large amounts of money withdrawn from their personal bank accounts.

The City of New Westminster does not use QR codes as a payment method for parking.

Authorities are investigating origin of the stickers and encouraging anyone who has used them to pay for parking in the last five days to check their bank accounts and report any suspicious activity to police and their banks.

“Our officers have already removed numerous stickers on meters throughout the city” said NWPD Sergeant Andrew Leaver. “We would like to remind the public to be vigilant. While the stickers may appear legitimate, acceptable forms of payment are printed on signs above or on the meter.”
