There are still three months left in the year, but 2026 is already the “biggest year on record” for change-of-control deals in the NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL, according to Arctos Insights. Cumulatively, such transactions have totaled $34.5 billion to date, 42% higher than last year and nearly double all of the deals that took place between 2016 and 2021 combined. Arctos does not think this is a short-term trend, saying there has been a “durable change in what buyers are willing to pay.” Teams that have been sold this year include the NFL’s Seahawks at a $9.61 billion valuation, the NBA’s Lakers at a $12.5 billion valuation, and MLB’s Padres at a $3.9 billion valuation.

The futures contracts, which must still receive regulatory approval, will be listed via CME Group. The idea is to allow everyday traders to put money on the future performance of MLB teams. FutureSports reached a similar agreement with the NHL in August.
