Watch: Artem Chigvintsev Says Nikki Garcia Breakup Was “Inevitable” in Rare Comment
Artem Chigvintsev is reflecting on the week that he said “completely changed” his life, resulting in his divorce from Nikki Garcia.
Nearly two years after the Dancing With the Stars alum was arrested for domestic violence stemming from an incident with the Total Bellas star, which led to their abrupt breakup, he described the entire ordeal as a “bad dream.”
“I had to completely switch off me,” Artem told fellow dancer Peta Murgatroyd on the April 20 episode of her The Penthouse With Peta podcast. “There was no way of processing everything.”
He continued, “Looking back, I’m like, ‘Woah. I don’t know where I am right now.'”
However, Artem—who shares son 5-year-old son Matteo with Nikki—noted that his “true answer would be no” if he could have done something differently.
“It was inevitable,” he shared. “Everything happens for a reason. I feel like for me to end up where I needed to end up, that needed to happen.”
The 43-year-old added, “I don’t think I would [have] ever left with that relationship on my own. I would have never done that just because I was raised differently.”
E! News has reached out to Nikki’s rep for comment but hasn’t heard back.
Nikki filed for divorce in September 2024, less than one month after police were called to the couple’s Napa, Calif., home on a report of a domestic dispute. In court documents obtained by E! News, the WWE wrestler accused Artem of attacking her over an argument about breakfast, leading her to throw their son’s shoes at her then-husband of two years in a “momentary lapse in judgment.”
Artem—who had celebrated two years of marriage to the Total Divas alum three days prior—denied Nikki’s accusations, alleging in his own court filing that she was the aggressor and attacked him. Ultimately, the Napa County District Attorney’s Office opted not to charge Artem in connection to the incident. Their divorce was finalized in 2025.

Looking back, Artem said that Matteo “played an enormous part” in why the couple didn’t break up sooner, though he still believes his son “needs to have both parents present.”
“I want my kid to have a full family,” he added. “There is a huge amount of relationships that, I think, nowadays people exit way too early.”
For now, he and Nikki are co-parenting Matteo together.
“I have to give it to Artem, who’s been amazing on adapting to my schedule,” Nikki said of their dynamic in a September episode of Sirius XM’s The Nikki and Brie Show. “I get Matteo almost more. He’s amazing.”
She added, “We’ve adapted well and Matteo’s thriving.”
