Four divers have died in the area since 2016

For the second time this year, a scuba diver has died in the waters off Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver.

According to West Vancouver police, a scuba diver became distressed in the waters at the popular dive spot at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday.

“Despite the efforts of fellow divers, West Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, and B.C. Emergency Health Services Air Ambulance, the diver, a male in his 60s, sadly did not survive, and was declared deceased at the scene,” a police spokesperson said in a news release.

“While the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, there are no early indications of suspicious circumstances related to his sudden death.”

Just over two months ago, on May 24, a 50-year-old scuba diver died in the same location. In that case several agencies, including the Canadian Coast Guard, responded but were unable to save the man.

There have been previous diver drownings in the same location, bringing the tally to four since 2016.

According to the District of West Vancouver, the waters off Whytecliff Park are popular with beginner and advanced divers. In particular, there is an underwater rock channel called The Cut that creates deep diving conditions close to the shore.
