Another B.C. youth has been injured in an e-scooter crash with a vehicle, prompting police to again remind the public that riders must be 16 years old to operate an e-scooter.

Nanaimo RCMP say a commercial van collided with a 15-year-old boy riding an e-scooter on a multi-use pathway adjacent to the road at about 2 p.m. Tuesday. The teen was treated for non life-threatening injuries.

RCMP say the driver stayed after the crash and co-operated with police. Investigators issued violation tickets to both the youth and the driver of the van. Police say the youth was ticketed for being underage to ride the scooter and for not wearing a helmet.

The collision is the third such crash in a week and the fourth this month as health officials report a rise in e-scooter accidents among youth. A 13 year old was seriously injured in Maple Ridge on Monday and a 15-year-old boy was also seriously injured in an e-dirt bike crash on the Barnet Highway Tuesday.

Two weeks ago, a 12-year-old was injured in an e-scooter crash in North Vancouver.

Nanaimo authorities are reminding the public that the minimum age to ride an e-scooter is 16 and approved helmets are mandatory. Speed on an e-scooter cannot exceed 25 kilometres per hour.

Meantime, Burnaby RCMP is seeking witnesses or dashcam footage of the crash on the Barnet Highway that left a 15-year-old boy in hospital Tuesday.

At about 2:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a serious motor vehicle collision involving an e-dirt bike westbound on Barnet Highway, near Cariboo Road North.

The driver of the vehicle remained to speak with police and the teen was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

E-scooter injuries among children in B.C. more than doubled in a single year, according to B.C. Children’s Hospital, with most of those hurt too young to legally ride.

The hospital recorded 81 e-scooter-related emergency room visits in 2025 and 2026, up from 37 the year before.
