Watch: Andrew Garfield Reveals His Unexpected Side Project
Andrew Garfield is singing a surprising tune.
After showcasing his singing abilities in 2021’s tick, tick…BOOM!, the Oscar nominee revealed that he is indeed keeping music close to his heart through an unexpected musical endeavor.
“I do have a band, we do Bugsy Malone covers,” Garfield exclusively told E! News’ Will Marfuggi, referencing the 1976 musical. “Look out for The Shangles. Look out for a group of middle-aged guys doing Bugsy Malone covers.”
While the 42-year-old is certainly giving a little love to the band, he noted theyare still waiting to see “what happens out there” for them in the future.
“We have some plans. We have some big plans,” he mused. “But I can’t really say it until it’s official—I don’t want to jinx it.”
But as the Amazing Spider-Man actor said, he and The Shangles aren’t in it for “any kind of commercial kind of success,” explaining, “It’s more of a passion project.”
And channeling passion and magic into his career is what Garfield is always searching for, which is why he’s grateful he also found it in his new film The Magic Faraway Tree, in theaters Aug. 21.
“A big part of the draw of doing the film is that it was an opportunity to play and be silly and not take things seriously,” he shared. “It’s like fantasy fulfillment.”

“We’ve all been so captured and taken over by these amazing technological developments in our culture and our society right now,” Garfield explained, “but they do suck a lot of our time away from us.”
That realization is part of why the script for The Magic Faraway Tree—which also costars ClaireFoy and Nicola Coughlan—spoke to his soul and made him realize that he needed “this theme in my life.”
“I need this essence in my life. I need more excuse to go into woods and to look at the tree bark and the ants crawling up the tree,” he said, “and to get lost in the magnificence of nature and the magic of it.”
