Watch: Andrew Garfield Shares How His Career Impacts His Grief in Real Life
Andrew Garfield isn’t sure if he wants to keep spinning his family’s web.
The Amazing Spider-Man alum recently detailed whether he still has plans to start a family or have kids in the near future, admitting he still isn’t feeling definitive either way.
“I’m the same as everyone else who’s even remotely cognizant of where we are and where we’re heading,” Garfield explained in an interview with GQ published Nov. 4. “I look at my friends who do have kids and the beauty of it obviously, but also the struggle of it and the inescapable agony of young people’s longing to belong to the screen rather than belong to the real world.”
Garfield—who has been in a relationship with Monica Barbaro since 2024—admitted that he has no Spidey sense when it comes to whether having kids is a good idea.
“It gives me pause for sure, like any person, I suppose,” he continued. “That being said, there is that kind of biological imperative, and there is that just kind of instinct, and there’s an image that your life with for so long—I have, anyway—of the concept of being a dad and going on an adventure.”
As he put it, “It’s mysterious to me.”
At 43, Garfield has been more vocal with the concept of having kids at some point.
“I’m childless,” he said during a September appearance on the Smartless podcast. “I’m not entirely proud of that. I would love to have kids. I would love to start a family.”
But while the We Live in Time actor—who previously dated Emma Stone and Dr. Kate Tomas—has taken off his mask when it comes to discussing the potential of having future children, he recently drew the line when it came to discussing his romantic life.

“It feels like a violation of my inner world, my private world,” Garfield explained in an interview with Vanity Fair last year. “I thought maybe that would soften at some point, but I’m very surprised to say that it hasn’t.”
He firmly acknowledged, “I have never, and I won’t ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone.”

Shannon Woodward had been dating Andrew before he skyrocketed to fame with The Social Network.”I think my girlfriend is proud of me and the fact that I’ve remained grounded,” he told Parade in 2010, the year of the film’s debut. “I think I’m just busier. That’s the main thing. I haven’t got as much time to mope about and complain that I’m bored. She travels with me when she’s not working. Whenever we have time, we’re together. When I’m on my own, you’d find me in the ocean surfing.”
But after three years together, the Under the Banner of Heaven alum and the Raising Hope actress parted ways.
