Alec Segaert’s early move paid off after he sprinted clear to win stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia in Novi Ligure.
Bahrain Victorious rider Segaert set off with 3 kilometres left of the 175 kilometre stage to open up a healthy gap to his rival sprinters, which proved enough to earn the 23-year-old from Belgium the biggest win of his fledgling career.

Britain’s Ethan Vernon had to settle for fourth amongst a large pack that finished three seconds behind Segaert’s time of three hours and 53 seconds with Toon Aerts of Lotto-Intermarche able to take second spot ahead of XDS Astana’s Guillermo Thomas Silva.
Three-stage winner Jhonatan Narvaez of UAE Team Emirates finished eighth to close the gap on Soudal-Quick-Step’s Paul Magnier in the points classification to 11.
Meanwhile, Bahrain Victorious’ Afonso Eulalio, who currently holds the pink jersey, increased his lead by six seconds to 33 seconds ahead of Jonas Vingegaard of Visma-Lease a Bike after the Portuguese cyclist won the sprint points from the Red Bull kilometre.
