Abia State Police Command has presented 21 cheques totalling N9,054,644.57 to families of deceased officers under the Group Life Assurance and Family Welfare Scheme of the Nigeria Police Force.
The cheques were presented to the beneficiaries at the Command Headquarters in Umuahia on Friday by the Commissioner of Police, CP Afolabi Wilfred.
Presenting the cheques on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, CP Wilfred extended condolences to the families of the deceased officers.
He noted that no compensation or insurance could replace their loved ones, but explained that the gesture was a demonstration of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to the welfare of families left behind by the fallen officers.
He said the financial benefits represented the Force’s institutional commitment to supporting the families of officers who paid the supreme price in the service of the nation.
The Commissioner encouraged the beneficiaries to see the gesture as recognition of the sacrifices made by their loved ones, assuring them that the Police Force remained conscious of its responsibility towards their welfare.
He prayed that God would grant the families the strength to bear their losses and also grant the deceased officers eternal rest.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Ifeanyi Ezindu, a member of the family of late Inspector Ezindu Egege, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the Nigeria Police Force for the financial support.
He noted that although the money could never replace the love and companionship of their deceased relative, the gesture was appreciated by the family.
Also speaking in tears, Mrs Onyebuchi Gloria Gift, wife of late Inspector Onyebuchi Henry Emeka, said the financial benefit would go a long way in supporting her and her children despite the irreplaceable loss of her husband.
She equally commended the Abia State Police Command for remembering the families of deceased officers and providing support.
