Each week the Filter newsletter cuts through the noise to bring you smart, practical recommendations on how to live better – from what is worth buying to the tools, habits and ideas that actually last.
I suffer from shopping-induced decision paralysis.
It took hours of obsessively researching the best running watch before buying my Garmin and even longer to find a basic black skirt suitable for the office.
To save you from experiencing that same paralysis, I asked you to write in with your trickiest purchasing questions. Below are a few of them, solved by our editors.
I want a new wood bedframe that a small dog can reach. Is the pricey Thuma one worth it?
Our recommendation:I’m the proud owner of a Thuma bedframe and a pet that requires a lower height for ease of access. I’m sorry (and pleased) to say that the big dollars you’ll spend on a Thuma will be worth it.

I’ve had mine for more than three years now, after graduating from an Ikea platform bed that probably could have used a box spring for support, and I don’t have that problem with my Thuma. The frames are extremely well made, sturdy and easy to assemble.
They do have a 30-day return policy and will work with you for pickup if you need. And yes, they are pretty expensive, but my bedframe is a tank and does the job well. Most importantly, my ancient 17-year-old cat Daisy can still make the jump up and down at her leisure. Megan Reynolds, Filter editor
Help me find an oven-safe 1-quart metal saucepan without a glass lid for cooking single serving meals.
Our recommendation:I have great news: a few stainless steel 1-quart sauce pans exist out there! They may have evaded your notice because they’re often called butter warmers. My 0.5-quart one from Dansk has merrily produced single-serving hot chocolates for me; I also love it because it just looks cute. The product sadly appears to be discontinued, but if you’re OK with enamel, I’ve found some vintage options.
As for stainless steel saucepans, Misen makes a high-quality 0.75-quart saucier, and All-Clad has a 1-quart option with a metal lid, though of course their prices reflect their long-lasting quality. Cuisinart offers one at a more respectable $50, although I haven’t tried it personally. If you’re looking for the most affordable option, the Farberware seems like the perfect fit. I want to replace my memory foam mattress with a latex one, but am worried that it may be too heavy, less comfortable and that potential fumigation could impact the material.
Our recommendation:Our contributor Richard Baguley recently reviewed Naturepedic’s organic latex-hybrid mattress. While testing, he said he “didn’t wake up with the hot, clammy feel I often do with memory foam mattresses”, and that he enjoyed a “comfortable night’s sleep with reassuringly firm support and a little bit of give”.

We also asked Changlu Wang, a professor at Rutgers University who researches urban pest management, for alternatives to fumigation for bedbugs, pests or other creepy-crawlies. Wang said you could steam your mattress (up to 194F) or use an encasement to trap bedbugs, which he said is the “simplest method for protecting the mattress and avoiding bites”.Lauren Gould, Filter editorial coordinator

We found a protein powder you don’t have to choke down

The Guardian newsroom bravely helped us try to rate whey protein powder from 10 popular brands.
The initial results were mixed: our testers described the taste of most of the samples as everything from “watery horchata” to “melted vanilla lip gloss”, leaving us feeling less than encouraged that any of these were worth their high price tags.
However, we eventually saw a glimmer of hope. After testing this one in milk and water, it emerged as our overall winner.

S’mores without the stink

Veteran outdoor product tester John Brandon spent a month trying six smokeless fire pits. His overall favorite was small but mighty – radiating heat more than 10F higher than the other models and outlasting the competition by 15 minutes.

Filter test kitchen: tinned fish for sushi, sandwiches and salads

I spent my summer traveling, tanning and trying a lot of tinned fish. After sampling trendy tins of tuna and classic cans of anchovies, I learned that the protein my grandparents have eaten for decades is more versatile than I thought.
