When does a tie not feel like one?
When it ends the way it did on Monday evening, Sept. 7.
Two first-half goals had the Classical girls soccer team in the driver’s seat and the lead remained there with just over two minutes left in the game. That’s when Middletown struck with a goal from Maya Ferris before Finley Berard played the role of hero, burying a direct kick with seconds left to play to earn the 2-2 draw.
A tie seemed like an unlikely result, especially with how the Purple played in the opening 40 minutes.

Classical’s Lucie Weber imposed her will on the field, scoring in the first 10 minutes and then adding another later in the half. The Purple dominated the midfield and had opportunities to add to the lead but, more importantly, prevented the Islanders from getting anything resembling a good look.
It was more of the same for the first 20 minutes of the second half. In the final 20, Middletown started pushing more on offense and had a couple opportunities, but nothing to show for it on the scoreboard.
Just as the result seemed like a certainty, Ferris went on a run up the right and buried home a chance to make it 2-1. Time was kept on the field and Classical was doing everything possible to kill out the clock.
In the waning seconds, the Purple put a ball from 40 yards out on goal and it nearly crept over the Middletown keeper’s hands. The ball was quickly moved upfield and made its way to Berard on the right side.

The junior looked like she had an opportunity to cross the ball to the middle and she was fouled while doing so. Berard hit the direct kick perfectly over the Classical wall and gave the Purple keeper no chance to make a play on the ball.
Moments after the ball was brought back to the center of the field, the whistle sounded on the game.
The tie was the second of the season for Middletown, which is now 1-0-2 in Division II and will be back on its home pitch on Thursday when it hosts Scituate. It’s also the second tie for Classical, which is 0-1-2 in D-II and will look for its first win of the season Thursday when it travels to play Burrillville.

The Bulldog’s Siena Mathieu scored 25 minutes into the contest but the Scarlet Knight’s Hailey Jones tied the score, 1-1, at the 35-minute mark and that would be how the D-II contest ended.
EWG goalie Haylee Galant recorded 5 saves in the contest and Westerly netminder Phoebe Brennan had 3 saves.
The Spartans extended a 2-1 halftime lead into a comfortable victory on Monday afternoon, with seven players each finding the net. Goal scorers for Uxbridge were Aubrey Bouchard, Maddie Pigeon, Addio Bloco, Ava Rosborough, Aubrey Belano, Mia Ouellette and Addie Blood (no assists on any).

The Avengers’ lone goal was scored by Olivia Roland with a reverse chip shot to cut the deficit to one heading into the half.
In net, Olivia Balicki made one save for Uxbridge, and Emma Guckian recorded an impressive 29 saves in the loss.
