‘A brutal and unprovoked act of violence’: Sleeping man stabbed with scissors more than 100 times during home invasion

NEW YORK (TCN) — A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for the death of a man he stabbed more than 100 times during a home invasion.
According to the Queens District Attorney, Yang Zhang broke into the home of 41-year-old Yat Ming Wong and his wife on May 22, 2022. Zhang accessed their apartment by climbing up to a third-floor balcony. The New York Post reported at the timethat according to police, he jumped from balcony to balcony to get to the apartment.
Once in couple’s home, Zhang stabbed Wong with a pair of scissors in what Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz called “a brutal and unprovoked act of violence.” Wong’s wife escaped without being injured.
The New York Post reports that Wong was pronounced dead at the scene and that Zhang was Tased before being taken into custody; he later told authorities he was looking for drugs. Police believed that Zhang was under the influence of a substance during the attack. The two men did not know each other.
Zhang pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on May 13, per the DA. He was sentenced June 3 to 18 years to life in prison.
