Watch: Jason Priestley Remembers Shannen Doherty Almost One Year After Her Death (Exclusive)
Jason Priestley was not psyched about a strange city, new house and no friends.
Unlike his Beverly Hills, 90210 character Brandon Walsh, whose famous line opened the iconic series in 1990, the Canadian expat was disappointed to realize certain friends no longer fit into his life when he became a television star.
“I had a few friends that had been my friends for quite some time,” Priestley said on the Still Here Hollywood podcast Oct. 26, “even before I moved to Los Angeles, I started to recognize behavior in them that wasn’t anything I wanted to be around anymore.”
And the life change even included cutting loose ties that the 57-year-old had previously believed would stand the test of time.
“I actually had to cut a lot of people out of my life,” he continued. “I didn’t have that many friends anyway, but a handful of guys that I thought were going to be my ride or die bros forever.”
As for why Priestley felt these friendships had run their course?
“Things happen, especially when you’re young like that, and people get jealous,” the Tombstone star remarked. “And then people start to do things to undercut.”
He added that, in his experience, “usually it’s girls who do that,” which caused him to be “very surprised to see this type of behavior.”
Indeed, getting settled in Hollywood was a big shift for the actor, who was raised in small-town British Columbia.
“I grew up in the forest in North Vancouver, British Columbia,” Priestley shared. “My life was more about playing hockey and going down to the river with my friends and doing that stuff.”
Still, the Wild Cards actor was able to forge new relationships when filming the beloved melodrama, like his close friendship with Luke Perry, who died of a stroke in 2019 at 52 years old. In addition, Priestley shared that he reconnected with Shannen Doherty—who was fired from 90210 after its fourth season—before her 2024 death from breast cancer.

As he explained, “I was super thankful for that when she passed away.”
And amid the highs and lows of working in Hollywood, Priestley—who married makeup artist Naomi Lowde-Priestley in 2005—wasn’t shy about naming Demi Moore as a peer he couldn’t forget after crossing paths at a community theater production in the 2000s.
“She absolutely just took my breath away,” he said. “There was just something about her. She was so luminous and present. She really had that—you know, people talk about star quality? You’re like, ‘Oh yeah, you got star quality.’ But then I met her, and I was just like, ‘Oh, OK. Yeah, I see it now.'”
