When the Pittsburgh Steelers go on the clock in the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft, they should have a clear picture of their future at quarterback. Aaron Rodgers will have moved on and the battle between Will Howard and Drew Allar will be sorted.
But unless both Allar and Howard fall flat, we are far less inclined to think the Steelers will use their top pick on a quarterback unless they have the chance to draft a generational talent. And they can do it without trading up. The Steelers only have six total picks in the draft as of now, so the idea of mortgaging picks doesn’t really fit with where this team is now.

The crew over at the Pro Football Network put together a new one-round mock draft and not only did they draft Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker but they traded up to do it.
Here’s what they have to say about the pick:
After years of messing around with veterans and holding out to wait on Aaron Rodgers’ plans, the Pittsburgh Steelers finally find their franchise quarterback in Drew Mestemaker, the impressive transfer from North Texas, who I think could be the best pick in the draft if he lands in this range.
In this scenario, Mestemaker is the third quarterback off the board after Dante Moore and Arch Manning. Mestemaker is definitely a guy to watch after his transfer but playing him in the top half of the first round this soon is some serious optimism.
