Watch: 2 NBA Fans Banned for Life After Storming Court During Knicks vs. Spurs Game
This stunt was a total air ball.
One man’s gamble had a major consequence at the Game 1 of the NBA finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonion Spurs on June 2, with the NBA officially doling out its punishment to the fan who ran onto the court to try and take a selfie with Victor “Wemby” Wembanyama.
“The individual who entered the court area during Game 1 of The Finals was arrested and will be banned for life from all NBA arenas,” an NBA spokesman said in a news release obtained by NBC News. “A second individual will also receive a lifetime ban for his role in the incident.”
The incident in question occurred with 6:28 left in the game’s fourth quarter, with the Knicks leading 92-86, bringing the neck-in-neck game to a screeching halt.
The man ran onto the court holding a cell phone in his hand, stopping in front of Wembanyama and Knicks center Mitchell Robinson and tried to take a selfie before being whisked away by two security guards.
Wemby—the towering, 7’ 4” forward-center for the Spurs—appeared confused when the fan first approached him, starting to smile before the fan was pulled away.
“I’ve never been in that situation,” the 22-year-old later confessed during a post-game press conference. “I didn’t I didn’t know how to act.”

In fact, the incident reminded Wemby of a previous party crasher.
“It really surprised me,” he continued, “almost as much as that time where a bat crushed the court.”
And indeed, in January 2024—during the Frenchman’s first season with the Spurs—a bat made its way into the stadium and began flying around the court. Thankfully, the Spurs’ mascot The Coyote was there to save the day.
Dressed in a Batman costume, The Coyote was eventually able to pin the bat down within a net on the court, its heroics earning the mascot raucous applause and cheering.

As for the showdown between the Knicks and the Spurs, the San Antonio team wasn’t as successful as its mascot. After a close game throughout all four quarters, the New York team eked out just ahead of the Spurs at 105-95.
And present for the showdown—which was thankfully bat-less—were a handful of celebrities, including die-hard Knicks fans Ben Stiller, Spike Lee and Timothée Chalamet.
