15 children found living in ‘deplorable conditions’ in Georgia apartment
COBB COUNTY, Ga. (TCN) — Three adults have been arrested in connection with the alleged treatment of 15 children police allege were living in “deplorable conditions.”
WXIA reportsthat on Sept. 24, the Georgia Department of Children and Family Services arrived at a two-bedroom apartment to conduct a welfare check on two children they believed were living at the home. When they arrived, they contacted police for assistance.
Police said they were unable to reach an adult at the home, so detectives obtained a search warrant, per WXIA. As the warrant was being processed, 15 children ranging in age from 1 to 17 allegedly came out of the home. Three hours later, three adults — who claimed they were the biological parents of all the children — arrived home: Ashley Jackson, 40; Derrick Jackson, 41; and Briana Reynolds, 36.
Police noted conditions in the apartment were “deplorable,” WXIA reports, and there was not enough food for the children, no toilet paper, and only nine beds for 18 people. The children were allegedly left unsupervised for hours and mold was visible, WRDW reports.
Each suspect was charged with first- and second-degree cruelty to children and possession of marijuana, WXIA reports. Additionally, Derrick Jackson was charged with crossing the guard line. Warrants obtained by WXIA allege he concealed marijuana in his rectum prior to entering the jail.
All of the children located in the home were transported to safe environments, WXIA reports.
